Model: Early 1920s Hermann Weissenborn Hawaiian guitar Style 3.
This guitar came in very good condition, with a solid flame Koa body with rope binding on the top, the fretboard, and around the soundhole. Three very fine hairline cracks are barely visible: two on the back edges and one on top near the 10th fret. Regardless, this piece has pretty good flame compared to other Style 3s, with a beautiful patina on the varnish and expected wear showing this was actually played.
The original tuners were lost long ago, and this one had 1940s Kluson 210s on it when it came in. Hermann installed 3 on a plate “worm under” tuners, which I verified by impression on the back of the headstock, indicating an early build date. I was unable to determine an exact date, which was made difficult due to the lack of a serial number.
By the mid-20s these were using modern geared tuners so finding original tuners is close to impossible, but I had this slightly mismatched set in my parts bin. A few of the gear screws don’t match, but they work good, especially considering they are 100 years old. I do have a brand-new set of Golden Age tuners that I will install if you prefer.
Work performed was minimal. Two back braces were lifting on edges, which were reglued with hide glue. All top braces were intact and the top shows no sinking or bellying, which are common issues on old Weissenborns.
The sound is obviously incredible. Weissenborns are incredibly well made, light, and amazingly responsive. It is speculated less than 5000 original Weissenborns were ever made. This is a great example of his work, and you won’t be disappointed.
